Key Points:

-Measure vent opening diameter and cut hole in roof same size.

-Bend all 4 sides of hole in roof  then roof vent will slip next to these.

- Roof around and fasten to roof.

Why is Attic Ventilation Important!!

Most roof estimates will need to take into consideration adding the correct roof attic ventilation system.

With out the proper Attic Air Ventilation, your home can become quite uncomfortable, it can also make temperatures rise so high that it might possibly damage the roof structure, which could include voiding the roofing warranty.

With the proper air ventilation system you will receive maximum air exchange, which is a balanced flow of intake and exhaust air moving though the attic.

Types of Attic Exhaust Vents:

We are going to focus only on Attic Exhaust Vents, which directly relates to giving roof estimates, all new roofs will need the proper attic ventilation system. Providing the customers with there options of the different types of attic exhaust vents could be the deciding factor as to who gets the job, plus it makes you look good. Over whelming the customer with knowledge is a plus!!

The Attic Exhaust Vents we are going to focus on include the following:

- Ridge Vents

- Power Vents

- Static Vents

Ridge Vents   installs on the peak of the roof allowing exhaust ventilation all along the ridge line from end to-end. There a many different types of ridge vents available some we prefer are the shingle over ridge vent it can be roofed over with ridge like the rest of the roof.

Installing: The sheathing along all the top ridge lines will need to be cut back where the ridge vent will be installed , to allow the hot air to escape thought to the ridge vent.

Power Attic Vents The two types of power attic vents we'll focus on are electric and solar.

Electric power attic vents are thermostatically and humid statically controlled to monitor heat and moisture amounts inside the attic.

Installing: Cut a hole in the sheathing, cover it with the vent and wire the vent to an electrical source.

Solar power attic vents   operates during the day and gets is power from the sun and uses no electricity.

Installing: Cut a hole in the sheathing and cover it with the vent, no wiring needed.

Static attic vents that we are going to cover include the dormer/louver static attic vent and the air wind turbine static attic vent.

The Dormer/Louver vent  is a vent that covers a hole cut in the sheathing to allow the hot air to escape.

The Wind Turbine vent also covers a hole cut in the sheathing to allow the hot air to escape. These vents spin and vent the air through natural force out of the attic.

Evaluate your customers needs:

To know what type of attic ventilation system best fits your customer, you should determine the square footage of your customers attic. This will help you to determine the correct amount of vents to install per roof side(s).

Note: You need one square foot of vent area for each 150 square feet of attic floor space.

The minimum is one square foot for every 300 square feet of attic floor space if there is a vapor retarder or the space is balanced between the ridge and intake vents.

Both inlet and outlet vent areas should be equal in total square feet of vent area. If one has to be larger, it should be the exit or exhaust vent at the top.

If your roof pitch is 7/12 to 10/12, plan to add 20% to your calculation for vent requirements; 30% for roof pitches of 11/12 and steeper.

Common Mistakes

  • Don't use a combination of different types of exhaust vents, like power vents with ridge vents. In this case, competing vents pull air from each other instead of soffit vents.
  • Don't underestimate your ventilation needs. Remember that 15 roof vents or 5 turbine vents would be needed to provide the same ventilation as 42 feet of ridge vent.
  • It is of no use to install exhaust vents without adequate intake. An effective balance of intake and exhaust must be achieved to properly ventilate the home. The flow of air in your attic is limited to the amount of intake.
  • Don't install a ridge vent that doesn't have an external baffle to increase airflow and protect from weather infiltration.
